April 2015 Honor Flight
In April 2015 I was fortunate enough to accompany my wife's grandfather Alfred Bland, US Navy Veteran, on a Honor Flight Hosted by Central Valley Honor Flight https://cvhonorflight.org/
As a Navy veteran myself visiting the memorials of my hero's has left an impression on me that cannot be explained in words.
Visiting the sacred and hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, the war memorials, National Museum, and more, is something that every veteran should get to do in his or her lifetime.

Washington DC
Washington DC offers several attractions that honor and celebrate veterans and their service. Here are some notable ones:
-
National World War II Memorial: Located on the National Mall, this monument honors the 16 million people who served in the American armed forces during World War II, including over 400,000 who gave their lives. The memorial features a central plaza with a fountain and surrounded by 56 pillars and two arches representing the states and territories that participated in the war.
-
Vietnam Veterans Memorial: Also on the National Mall, this memorial consists of three parts: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the Three Servicemen Statue, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial. The Wall is perhaps the most iconic, inscribed with the names of over 58,000 service members who died or went missing during the Vietnam War.
-
Korean War Veterans Memorial: Adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial, this memorial consists of 19 stainless steel statues representing a squad on patrol, along with a wall and Pool of Remembrance. The statues, along with a Mural Wall, commemorate the more than 5.8 million Americans who served during the Korean War.
-
Arlington National Cemetery: Just across the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, this cemetery is the final resting place for more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans, and their families. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Changing of the Guard ceremony are also solemn attractions within Arlington Cemetery.
-
United States Navy Memorial: Located on Pennsylvania Avenue, this memorial honors those who have served or are currently serving in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. It includes a naval heritage center, an outdoor plaza with a "Granite Sea" map of the world, and a Lone Sailor statue.
-
National Museum of the United States Navy: Part of the Naval History and Heritage Command, this museum is located at the Washington Navy Yard. It offers exhibits that highlight the history of the U.S. Navy, from its origins to the present day.
These attractions not only commemorate the sacrifices of veterans but also serve as reminders of their service and dedication to the country.
